Woodcarver Chat Instructions

Woodcarver Chat Home Page

Welcome to Woodcarver Chat, Hosted at

Getting to our chats is not difficult

...you have any of 3 different routes:
  1. If your computer is a PC and you have an IRC Chat Program like mIRC

  2. If you are using an IRC chat program:
    1. Log onto your ISP.
    2. Open mIRC. You should see a box "mIRC Options". If you don't, then click on View then on "Options".
Fill in the information there...you do NOT have to put in your real name or email address. For security purposes, make them up. Do put in the nickname you want and an alternative.
    4. Click on the button with the sunburst icon, just to the right of the button that says, "Connect to Server". Where it says "IRC Network", scroll down until you see "Starlink-IRC" and highlight that so it shows in the window. There is also a Starlink network, so make sure that the one you select has the "IRC" after it. Now click on the arrow next to the IRC server window. That will list a number of Starlink-IRC servers....select one of them. The Starlink-IRC random server will automatically pick one of the servers for you, so you can use that one. With one of the Starlink-IRC servers in the window, click on "Connect to Server".
--If the Starlink Random Server is not in your mirc program you can add it: Click the "add" button. Where it says "Description" type "Starlink Random Server" Where it says "IRC Server" type IRC.STARLINK-IRC.ORG Port should be 6664,6665,6666,6667,6668,6669 (all of those with no spaces between them) and "Group" is Starlink-IRC
    5. Once connected, you'll see lots of scrolling text.
When that stops, type /join #Woodcarverchat in the window at the bottom and hit your "enter" key.
(you need the / and #, and Woodcarverchat must be spelled exactly right)
  3. If your computer is a MAC and you have an IRC Chat Program like IRCle

  4. If your computer is a MAC, then I am afraid I can't help you in setting up the program.
I can tell you that the important points are that you make sure you connect to the Starlink-IRC network
and that you make sure that you join the #Woodcarverchat channel (aka chat room.

  5. If you do not have a chat program

  6. If you are not using an IRC chat program, you have several options for joining the chats. The CGI Chat links are probably the easiest and CGI Chat is compatible with WebTV and all popular browsers .
    --CGI Web Chat--
Click on one of the links below, enter a nickname and enter #woodcarverchat where it asks for the channel and click "log in".

    --Java Chat--
These are direct links to #woodcarverchat, so all you will have to enter is your nickname. If you don't see a place to enter a nickname, minimize the screen or look on your task bar for a button that will say something like "JAVirc V 2.3b"

Note: If you use Windows XP, you may have problems connecting to IRC. This is due to the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) that ships with XP. You may need to turn ICF off in order to chat. You can install Zone Alarm, a very good free firewall, as a replacement.
To disable the firewall, follow these steps. (Or go see the microsoft XP website for more information.)
  • Open Network Connections (Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections.)
  • Click the Dial-up, LAN or High-Speed Internet connection that you want to protect.
  • Under Network Tasks, click "Change settings of this connection".
  • On the Advanced tab, under "Internet Connection Firewall": Clear the "Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet" check box.
There is a lot of good information on the Starlink-irc web page

If you have any problems, please feel free to email Mush
